Plan Productive Trips and Meetings in Hong Kong

Inside Tips for Successful Business Travel to Hong Kong

Hong Kong has emerged as the heart of the Asian business and financial world, and the city is well-equipped to entertain events of every size.  There are many different things that need to be considered when planning or attending a meeting in Hong Kong.

To guide your travel plans, the event specialists at Grand Hyatt Hotel Hong Kong have developed a short guide that will answer your questions and help you organise successful Hong Kong meetings and business trips.

Getting here:

  • Travel Documentation: For the most part, business travellers with valid passports should not need a visa to enter Hong Kong. But some countries have different requirements, so check with your airline or local consulate well in advance of your trip.
  • Airport Information: Hong Kong International Airport, located on Lantau Island, is supported by a vast transportation network. Visitors will have no trouble finding their way into the city from the airport, thanks to the swift Airport Express, public buses, limousine service and taxis.
  • Currency: Hong Kong’s unit of currency is the Hong Kong dollar (HK$).  You can change money at banks, hotels or exchange bureaus, but bear in mind that banks usually offer the best exchange rate.

Staying here:

  • Climate: Generally speaking, the temperature in Hong Kong ranges from 15 to 20 degrees Centigrade in the winter and up to 35 degrees Centigrade in the summer. Humidity can be quite stifling in the summer months, so bring loose-fitting clothes. July through September is typhoon season; while the city’s early warning system is extremely effective and visitors shouldn’t be worried from a safety standpoint, there is the possibility of delayed or diverted flights as a result of adverse weather (which could in turn affect your meeting).
  • Electricity: Hong Kong runs on 220 volts. Most major hotels provide adapters or transformers for those who need them.
  • Transportation: The most efficient way to navigate the city is typically by taxi; cabs are plentiful and not overly expensive.

Top Meeting Venues:

  • The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) is one of the city’s two major conference and exhibition venues (AsiaWorld-Expo is the other). A recent expansion has brought the HKCEC’s total exhibition space to over 80,000 square meters – including meeting rooms, theatres, exhibition halls and function areas.
  • AsiaWorld-Expo is Hong Kong’s other major meeting and convention venue, which is only slightly smaller than HKCEC (but still vast), offering 70,000 square meters of space. Concerts by major musical acts are staged here as well.
  • Grand Hyatt Hong Kong features 21 event venues, including the Grand Ballroom, which can accommodate 950 people.  This hotel is an excellent choice for smaller meeting groups.

Breaks and After-Hours:

If possible, allow for some downtime between meetings on your trip, so that you and your colleagues can enjoy some of the unique attractions and incredible dining that Hong Kong has to offer.

  • Horseracing: Plan a trip to see the horses at Happy Valley and Sha Tin, both first-rate horseracing facilities.
  • Nature: Take a leisurely walk up Victoria Peak, and marvel at the wildlife.
  • Arts & Culture: For a more cultural experience, check out a performance at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Both a live-entertainment venue and a performing arts school, HKAPA offers shows, films, dance recitals and more.
  • Dining: Satisfy your appetite at One Harbour Road; or for an authentic experience, sample dim sum at an open-air food stall.
